The 2005 Chilean GSHS survey, conducted in Region VIII Mun without Intervention, employed a school-based cluster sampling design to assess health behaviors among 13-15 year old students. The survey covered key areas including alcohol and drug use, dietary habits and overweight, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and unintentional injuries and violence. Sample sizes ranged from 7th to 1st secondary grades, with a school response rate of 100%, student response rate of 82%, and overall response rate of 82%. Total participants were 1,857 students aged 13-15.
Key findings by domain:

- Dietary behaviors and overweight: Over 40% of students were overweight, and about 11.4% were obese, with hunger-related issues affecting a small minority.
- Hygiene: Poor handwashing before eating and after using the toilet was reported, with low percentages indicating good hygiene practices.
- Mental health: Notable percentages indicated loneliness in the past year, with boy-affected group showing lower severity; suicidal ideation was higher among girls.
- Physical activity: Less than 12% met physical activity guidelines, while sedentary behaviors were common, exceeding 30% daily time.
- Protective factors: Students frequently missed school without permission, and school kindness scores were variable, with parents providing minimal supervision in free time.
- Sexual behaviors: Teenage sexual activity was present in nearly 14.5% of cases, and condom use was inconsistent among those with experience.
- Tobacco use: Cigarette smoking was reported by over 24% in the past 30 days, with varying rates by gender; secondhand smoke exposure was common.
- Unintentional injuries and violence: High incidences of physical attacks, fights, and injuries were observed; bullying was prevalent among a majority of students.
Overall, the survey highlighted significant health concerns such as substance use, obesity, mental health issues, and violence prevalence among adolescents in this region.
