Summary of Chile GSHS 2005 Fact Sheet
Overview
The 2005 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Region VIII Mun with Intervention, Chile, was conducted to assess health behaviors and factors among students. It focused on alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors related to HIV/STIs and unintended pregnancies, unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene, dietary behaviors and overweight, physical activity, mental health, and protective factors. Data was collected from students aged 13-15 years using a school-based survey with a two-stage cluster sampling design, achieving a 100% school response rate and an 89% student response rate, involving 1,859 participants. Results are based on self-reported data and provide insights into key health indicators for adolescents.
Key Findings
Alcohol and Other Drug Use
Approximately 23.4% of students reported alcohol consumption in the past 30 days, with higher rates among boys. About 22% had experienced drunkenness at least once in life, and around 10% faced negative consequences like health issues or fights linked to drinking. Among all students, 6.6% admitted to drug use at some point.
Sexual Behaviors
Around 10.2% of students had engaged in sexual intercourse, with boys more likely than girls. Sexual debut was less common among girls. Among those who had sex, about 52.6% used condoms the last time.
Tobacco Use
About 19.1% of students smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, and 4.6% used other tobacco products. Exposure to smoking was common, with 73.8% reporting someone smoking in their presence.
Dietary Behaviors and Overweight
High rates of overweight (39.1%) and obesity (11.4%) were reported. Less than 1% of students frequently went hungry due to lack of food at home.
Hygiene Practices
Few students practiced proper handwashing; around 3-4% never washed hands before eating, and similar or slightly higher rates applied to after toilet use.
Mental Health
Significant concerns were noted, with approximately 15-26% feeling lonely or considering suicide, and about 9-16% reporting no close friends.
Physical Activity
Only about 13% met the guideline of being physically active for 60 minutes daily, while nearly 32% spent three or more hours daily on sedentary activities.
Protective Factors and Violence
Over 17% missed classes without permission, and about 31% reported that most students rarely behaved kindly at school. Over half were exposed to physical attacks, 40% bullied, and 36% injured.
Injuries and Violence
High prevalence of violence: about 31% were physically attacked, 40% involved in fights, 36% seriously injured, and over 48% bullied in the last 30 days.
