Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) 2007, Ecuador (Quito): Fact Sheet Summary

The 2007 GSHS in Ecuador (Quito) was a school-based survey focusing on health behaviors among students aged 13-15 years. It assessed various areas including alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors related to HIV/STIs and unintended pregnancies, unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene, dietary habits, overweight, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and protective factors. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a sample of 2,215 students across grades 8, 9, 10, and Freshman, achieving high school and student response rates of 92% and 93%, respectively, along with an overall response rate of 86%.

Key findings from the survey included:

• Sexual activity was reported, with condom use low among those who had sex; boys were more likely to have multiple partners.
• Tobacco use was present, with higher cigarette smoking among boys; smoking exposure was common.
• Violence and injuries were widespread, including physical attacks, fights, and bullying; bullying rates were higher among boys.

This survey provided data for comparing youth health trends and informing public health interventions in Ecuador.
