报告摘要
Survey Overview
The Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was conducted in Chile's Metropolitan Municipality without intervention in 2005, focusing on health behaviors and factors among students in grades 7, 8, and 1 secondary. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a 100% school response rate and 85% student response rate, involving 1,777 participants. Only students aged 13-15 years were analyzed.
Students self-reported data on a computer-scannable sheet, covering areas such as alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors, unintentional injuries, hygiene, dietary habits, physical activity, mental health, and protective factors.
Key Findings
- Alcohol and Drug Use: High rates of alcohol consumption (35.9% overall, with girls showing higher use) and associated risks like drunkenness (28.8%) and health issues (16.8%). Drug use was also significant (12.5%), with notable gender differences.
- Dietary Behaviors and Overweight: Overweight prevalence was high (41.6%), with obesity at 13.1%. Very few students reported going hungry due to lack of food at home (0.8%).
- Hygiene: Poor handwashing habits were uncommon but evident, with 4.8% never washing hands before eating and 1.4% never after using the toilet.
- Mental Health: Loneliness and suicidal ideation were prominent issues (16.3% lonely, 22.1% considered suicide). Most students had close friends (8.1% did not).
- Physical Activity: Insufficient physical activity was widespread (7.9% met daily guidelines), while sedentary behaviors were common (36.7% spent over three hours per day sitting).
- Protective Factors: Bullying and truancy were concerns (42.7% bullied, 28.4% missed school without permission). Parental engagement was low (34.0% felt parents didn't know their activities).
- Sexual Behaviors: A significant minority were sexually active (18.2%), with condom use low in recent encounters (52.3% for those who had intercourse).
- Tobacco Use: Smoking was high (32.8%), and exposure to smoking was common (84.1% exposed to secondhand smoke).
- Unintentional Injuries and Violence: Physical attacks, fights, and injuries were frequently reported (32.7% attacked, 43.2% in fights, 34.8% seriously injured).
Overall, the survey highlights prevalent issues like substance use, mental health challenges, sedentary lifestyles, and risky behaviors in this age group, indicating a need for targeted interventions.
