Global School-based Student Health Survey Fact Sheet: Benin 2009 Analysis Summary

Methodology: Employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with high school and student response rates (>90%). Students self-reported data on computer-scannable sheets.
Key Findings

- Prevalence: 16.4% students drank alcohol in the past 30 days, higher among boys (18.2%) than girls (12.5%).
- First Drink Age: 76.6% who ever drank started before age 14.
- Drunkness: 13.2% had been drunk at least once in their lifetime, with slightly higher rates among boys.
Dietary Behaviors

- Obesity: Low prevalence overall (0.3%), much higher among girls (1.0%) than boys.
- Carbonated Drinks: 31.7% consumed carbonated soft drinks daily, varying significantly by gender (27.8% boys vs. 39.1% girls).
Drug Use
- Marijuana: 1.5% overall had used marijuana. Prevalence was slightly higher among girls (15 out of 30 findings mention boys/girls comparison for all categories). (Additional note: First use under age 14 was not reported due to low sample size).
Hygiene
- Poor daily tooth brushing (less than once a day): 5.8% total (6.6% boys vs. 4.0% girls).
- Inadequate handwashing after toilet use: 12.0% total (13.7% boys vs. 8.5% girls).
Mental Health
- Suicidal Ideation: High prevalence - 21.9% seriously considered suicide, and 28.5% actually attempted it over the past 12 months.
- Lack of Close Friends: 14.2% reported having no close friends.
Physical Activity
- Very low levels of daily physical activity for >=60 minutes (30.2% total).
- PE Class Frequency: 26.1% attended 3+ days/week.
- Sedentary Behavior: 18.1% spent >=3 hours/day sitting compared to typical school day.
Protective Factors
- Truancy Frequency: 16.1% missed classes without permission in the past 30 days.
- Parent/Wardian Support: Moderate levels of parental understanding (47.5%) and knowledge of free time activities (50.1%) were reported.
Tobacco Use
- Low prevalence – 2.8% smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, with minimal gender difference overall but high for boys by comparison.
- Smoking around students was reported by 24.8% (higher in boys).
Violence & Unintentional Injury
- Physical Fighting: 32.0% involved in fights in the past 12 months.
- Serious Injury: High rate of 55.9% reporting serious injury in the past year.
- Bullying: 42.1% experienced bullying in the past 30 days.
The summary highlights significant gender disparities in several behaviors (alcohol, diet, hygiene, tooth brushing, truancy) and substantial overall risks particularly related to mental health (suicidal ideation and attempts), physical inactivity, poor diet leading to underweight and overweight/obesity, and engagement in violence (fighting, injuries, bullying).
