报告摘要
Madagascar conducted the STEPS Survey in 2005 to assess chronic disease risk factors among adults aged 25-64 years in Antananarivo and Toliara. This population-based survey used a multi-stage cluster sampling design and included 5,743 participants. It covered three steps: Step 1 focused on socio-demographic and behavioral data like tobacco use, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, and physical activity; Step 2 included physical measurements such as body mass index and blood pressure; Step 3 involved biochemical measurements like blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
Key findings show high tobacco use among males, low alcohol consumption with significant binge drinking in men, insufficient fruit and vegetable intake across all genders, and low physical activity levels. Overweight and obesity rates were relatively low, but hypertension affected over a third of the population. Risk factor combinations revealed that about 12-14% had none of the major risks, while 12-17% had at least three risks, with higher proportions in older age groups.
The survey highlighted disparities by gender and age, providing data to inform public health strategies for chronic disease prevention. For more details, contact the WHO STEPS focal point.
