报告摘要
Mauritania (Nouakchott) STEPS Survey 2006 Summary
The survey assessed chronic disease risk factors in Mauritania's capital through a population-based study of adults aged 15-64 using a multi-stage cluster sampling method with 2,600 participants. Step 1 collected socio-demographic and behavioral data, Step 2 included physical measurements, and Step 3 provided biochemical data. Key findings are summarized by step.
Step 1: Behavioral Risk Factors
- Tobacco Use: 18.9% of adults smoked tobacco overall; males had a higher prevalence (34.2%) compared to females (5.7%). Daily smokers were 32.7% of males and 4.8% of females. Age of initiation and cigarette consumption were similar between males and those who smoke.
- Alcohol Consumption: Insufficient data provided; no percentages for abstainers or current drinkers reported, limiting interpretation; binge drinking data also not listed.
- Fruit and Vegetable Intake: Low consumption observed across groups: mean fruit servings/day were 0.6-0.7, vegetable servings/day were 1.9-2.1, and most consumed less than 5 servings daily. Fruit intake average was similar for both sexes, but vegetable slightly higher in males.
- Physical Activity: 50.8% engaged in low activity (<600 MET-min/week), and about 21.4% had no vigorous activity. Median activity time per day was low; higher activity rates noted in males (11.2%) compared to females (9.5%).
Step 2: Physical Measurements
- Body Mass Index (BMI): Mean BMI was 25.5 overall. Males had lower BMI (23.6) than females (27.2); overweight (BMI ≥25) was 31.8% in males, 59.4% in females; obesity (BMI ≥30) was 8.6% in males, 31.5% in females.
- Waist Circumference: Average was 81.9 cm for males and 89.6 cm for females.
- Blood Pressure: Elevated systolic (SBP ≥125 mmHg or on medication) and diastolic (DBP ≥76.9 mmHg) levels were detected, with 22.4% overall having raised BP (defined as ≥140/90 mmHg or on medication), and 9.0% meeting stricter hypertension criteria.
Step 3: Biochemical Measurements
- Fasting Blood Glucose: Average glucose was 4.9 mmol/L overall. 6.2% had raised blood glucose levels or were on medication (defined as ≥7.0 mmol/L plasma or ≥6.1 mmol/L capillary blood), with males showing lower prevalence (5.9%) than females (6.4%).
- Total Cholesterol: Mean level was 4.4 mmol/L. 24.4% had raised cholesterol (≥5.0 mmol/L or ≥190 mg/dl), and 3.7-4.7% met higher thresholds for high risk.
Key Observations
The survey indicated high prevalence of tobacco use, low fruit/vegetable intake, high inactivity, and elevated BMI, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels across most subpopulations, suggesting significant chronic disease risks. Data collection involved subsamples for certain metrics due to low response rates in gender-specific categories. The planned 2011 repeat survey highlights ongoing surveillance needs.
