报告摘要
Solomon Islands STEPS Survey 2006 Summary
-
Objective: Assessed chronic disease risk factors (smoking, alcohol, diet, physical activity, body measurements, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol) in adults (15-64 years) in the Solomon Islands (2005-2006).
-
Design: Population-based, multi-stage cluster sample survey; 2,833 participants.
-
Key Findings by Risk Factor Category:
- Tobacco Use:
- Prevalence of current smoking: 41.4% overall; higher among males (56.1%) than females (26.1%).
- Daily smoking: 29.7% overall; highest among males (43.4%); average age starting daily smoking was earlier for males. High prevalence (>60%) of users of manufactured cigarettes among current smokers.
- Alcohol Consumption:
- High prevalence of lifetime abstention (47.9%) and current drinking (37.7%).
- Binge drinking was common among current drinkers, especially males (15.8%).
- Diet and Nutrition:
- Low consumption of fruits and vegetables: Fewer than 5 servings combined daily reported by 93%+ of the population. Median daily fruit and vegetable servings were low.
- Sedentary Physical Activity: More than half (45%) of the population had low activity levels. Median daily activity time varied significantly.
- Body Mass:
- High prevalence of overweight (55.2% overall, >47% in males) and obesity (23.7% overall, >18% males, >30% females). High average BMI.
- Waist circumference was elevated, and blood pressure (SBP/DBP) was suboptimal (high prevalence of elevated readings), though medication use was low.
- Blood Glucose and Lipids:
- Fasting blood glucose levels indicated significant prevalence of impaired fasting glycaemia (10.4% overall) and elevated fasting blood glucose (17.7% overall).
- High prevalence of raised total cholesterol (21.2% overall), again higher among females (26.1%).
- Tobacco Use:
-
Summary of Combined Risk Factors:
- Defined risk factors included: current daily smoking, severe/very severe BMI, low fruit/veg intake, and/or high BP/non-optimal activity.
- Only a very small proportion (0.3-0.6%) of the population had none of these risk factors.
- A large proportion (40-55%) of the adult population had three or more key lifestyle and metabolic risk factors, indicating a high burden of potential chronic disease risk. Risk factor prevalence was high across all age groups examined.
