TrACSS 2022 Country Report Summary: Honduras
Introduction
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a global health threat, linked to Sustainable Development Goals, with recent evidence showing nearly 5 million deaths in 2019. The Tracking AMR Country Self-Assessment Survey (TrACSS) monitors implementation of AMR National Action Plans (NAPs) annually, using a five-point capacity scale (A-E). In 2022, 166 out of 194 countries participated. This report summarizes Honduras' responses and progress, highlighting sector-specific challenges.
Honduras Overview
Honduras faces limited financial, human, and technical resources for AMR efforts. Progress in multisectoral AMR coordination and NAP implementation is uneven, with ad-hoc interventions rather than a unified strategy. Key challenges include low political commitment, inconsistent funding, and gaps in data-driven decision-making. The country shows moderate improvement in some areas but lags in surveillance, monitoring, and environmental risk assessments. Data quality varies, and use is inconsistent for policy adjustments.
Sector-Wise Analysis
- Human Health: Capacity is rated "limited" (B) in training, consumption monitoring, and surveillance. Key messages emphasize optimizing antimicrobial use, adopting global classifications, and strengthening diagnostics and IPC to reduce infections and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Animal Health: Rated "limited" (B-C). Focus is on training, surveillance, biosecurity, and prudent antimicrobial use. Integration of laboratories into AMR surveillance is incomplete, requiring enhanced quality management.
- Food and Agriculture: Rated "limited" (B). Challenges include insufficient training, poor surveillance systems, and inadequate biosecurity practices. Recommendations stress reducing antimicrobial use through good husbandry and legislation.
- Environment: Rated "none" or "limited" for risk assessments, legislation, and monitoring of antimicrobial residues. Key actions involve conducting environmental impact assessments, enforcing regulations to prevent contamination, and improving water quality surveillance to track resistance genes.
Key Messages and Challenges
- Strengthen multisectoral coordination with dedicated leadership and adequate funding to prioritize AMR interventions.
- Enhance legislation on antimicrobial prescription and sale, and ensure data from consumption/use and resistance surveillance inform policy and enforcement.
- Improve awareness campaigns for the general public and youth to combat AMR through targeted education and innovative strategies.
- Implement standardized monitoring and evaluation systems to guide operational decisions and support NAP sustainability.
Conclusion
Honduras needs a robust, coordinated approach with increased investment in capacity-building, data utilization, and environmental protection to effectively address AMR. Strengthening legal frameworks and public awareness are critical for long-term success, aligning with global AMR action plans.
