Benin (Cotonou) STEPS Survey 2007: Summary
Survey Overview
The Benin (Cotonou) STEPS Survey was conducted from August to September 2007 to assess chronic disease risk factors among adults aged 25-64 in Cotonou, Benin. It included three steps: Step 1 (socio-demographics and behaviors), Step 2 (physical measurements), and Step 3 (biochemical tests). The survey used cluster sampling and involved 2,568 participants.
Key Findings by Risk Factor Category
Step 1: Behavioral Risk Factors
- Tobacco Use: Low smoking prevalence (3.8% overall), higher in males (9.7%), with early initiation and daily use common among smokers.
- Alcohol Consumption: About 43.9% were abstainers, with moderate drinking and binge drinking more common in males.
- Fruit and Vegetable Intake: Average consumption was low (<5 servings/day; 94.7% overall), similar across sexes, with fruits consumed slightly more often.
- Physical Activity: Significant proportions had low activity levels (16.2% overall), high activity (66.2%), and median activity time around 240-260 minutes per day.
Step 2: Physical Measurements
- Body Weight Status: High overweight (48.9% overall) and obesity rates (21.6%); males and females had varying distributions.
- Blood Pressure: Mean SBP and DBP were elevated; about 28.6% had raised BP (≥140/≥90 mmHg), with similar rates across sexes.
Step 3: Biochemical Tests
- Fasting Blood Glucose: Elevated levels in some participants; 8.0-10.9% had impaired fasting glycaemia or raised blood glucose.
- Cholesterol: Not reported due to lack of data in the summary fact sheet.
Summary of Combined Risk Factors
- Overall, 1.5% had none of the major risk factors, while 24.8% had at least three.
- Prevalence increased with age, highest (>42.6%) at 45-64 years.
Notes
- Results are based on a representative sample for adults aged 25-64.
- The survey methodology followed WHO STEPS guidelines for chronic disease surveillance.
