Disasters Caused 9.8 Million Movements:

• Storms triggered 45.8 million displacement events, the highest figure since the start of IDMC’s monitoring in 2008.
• Countries like the Philippines (record 8.9 million), India (3.3 million), and the US (1.1 million) were among the most affected nations.
• Pre-emptive evacuations proved vital in some cases, avoiding higher tolls.

Regional Breakdowns:

• Sub-Saharan Africa: Nearly half (38.8 million) of all IDPs lived here, with Sudan, DRC, and Nigeria among the worst affected.
• Americas: Hurricane season (Sept-Oct 2024) drove 14.5 million disaster displacements, mostly in the US and Brazil.
• Europe and Central Asia: Recorded 597,000 disasters, many linked to weather and infrastructure issues.

The report concludes that climate change and conflict often compound each other’s effects, prolonging IDPs’ displacement and hindering their path to solutions. Data collection remained incomplete but was expanded through collaborations and technology.
