Monthly Oil & Gas Data Review Summary
This summary presents key findings from the January 2024 update of JODI oil and gas data, covering oil and gas trends through November 2023.
Oil Highlights:
- Global oil demand decreased by approximately 1.6 million barrels per day (mb/d) in November, ending a period outside the 5-year seasonal range for the first time since April. The decline was driven by monthly decreases in China (1.1 mb/d), the US (0.355 million barrels per day kb/d), and Saudi Arabia (0.236 kb/d).
- Year-on-year demand was lower by 0.267 mb/d. China's crude imports fell by 1.2 mb/d monthly, reaching 10.38 mb/d, and were down 1.0 mb/d from the previous year.
- Crude oil production showed slight monthly gains but remained marginally below the 5-year average; year-on-year, production dropped by 0.9 mb/d, with Saudi Arabia contributing the largest y/y decrease of 1.7 mb/d.
- Saudi Arabia's crude production decreased by 0.122 mb/d monthly to 8.8 mb/d, while exports increased by 0.039 mb/d to a 5-month high of 6.34 mb/d.
- Canada set a new record for crude production increase of 0.263 mb/d monthly.
- Crude and refined product inventories increased by 264 mb combined in November but were still 269 mb below the 5-year average level.
Gas Highlights:
- Natural gas production reached an all-time high in November, boosted by increases in China, Nigeria, and Norway; year-on-year gains were 7.6 bcm, led by the US (+5.0 bcm), Nigeria (+3.0 bcm), and China (+1.1 bcm).
- Demand rose seasonally in November and aligned with the 5-year average; however, EU and UK demand remained near the bottom of the seasonal range.
- Total gas inventories decreased by 5.4 bcm month-on-month but were above seasonal levels, with EU and UK inventories falling 4.3 bcm and ending at nearly 95% full capacity.
