Summary of IEF Monthly Oil & Gas Data Review - August 2023
Oil
- Demand: Increased by 1 million barrels per day month-on-month in June to reach a 5-year seasonal high. Year-on-year increase of approximately 670 thousand barrels per day driven by the US, India, Canada, and France. China's data not included in the update, but its demand averaged 1.5 million barrels per day above seasonal highs from March-May. Overall demand is below 5-year averages.
- Production: Crude production fell by 120 thousand barrels per day in June, primarily due to lower US output. Russian production data has not been reported since March, contributing to a second consecutive monthly decline below year-ago levels. Saudi Arabia's crude production decreased marginally by 3 thousand barrels per day to 9.96 million barrels per day, while exports dropped by 124 thousand barrels per day to a 21-month low. Iraq's crude production was 530 thousand barrels per day below year-ago levels, but total product demand reached an all-time high. Kuwait's product exports rose to a record high, with diesel exports exceeding 300 thousand barrels per day.
- Stocks: Crude oil inventories decreased by 7 million barrels in June, while oil products inventories increased by 26 million barrels. Overall stocks are below 5-year averages.
Gas
- Production: Natural gas production declined by 8 billion cubic meters in June, led by a 6 billion cubic meter drop in Russian output, bringing Russia's production to a 7-year low.
- Demand: Gas demand increased in June, above the 5-year range, driven by strong consumption in North America (US and Canada). EU+UK demand remained below seasonal averages.
- Stocks: Gas inventories increased by 16.7 billion cubic meters month-on-month, remaining near the top of the 5-year range. EU+UK inventories rose by 6.3 billion cubic meters, closing the month at 76% full.
