Monthly Oil & Gas Data Review Summary
Report Period: November 2023
Key Findings from JODI Databases (Through September 2023):
Oil Summary:
- Global oil demand in JODI-reporting countries reached a seasonal record high for the fifth consecutive month in September, despite a slight month-on-month decline.
- Year-on-year demand growth of 2.5 million barrels per day (mb/d) was driven by China, US, India, and Saudi Arabia.
- China's crude imports decreased by 1.3 mb/d month-on-month to 11.16 mb/d but remained above year-ago levels.
- Crude production fell to a 23-month low in September, with no data from Russia since March; Saudi Arabia's production increased by 57 kb/d to 8.98 mb/d, and exports rose by 170 kb/d to 5.75 mb/d.
- Crude and refined product inventories showed net growth, with total crude stocks below the five-year average by 271 million barrels.
Gas Summary:
- Natural gas production remained above the five-year seasonal range in September despite a small net month-on-month decline, primarily due to Norway and Australia.
- Russia's data was not included; demand slightly decreased but stayed above the five-year range, driven by US, Canada, and India.
- Total gas inventories rose by 11 billion cubic metres month-on-month and remained above the five-year average.
- EU and UK gas demand was below the five-year range, but inventories reached nearly 95% full at month-end.
Highlights:
- For oil, product demand (including gasoline, LPG, diesel, and fuel oil) was at five-year highs, except jet fuel which was marginally lower but close to pre-COVID levels.
- Gas demand supported inventory builds across regions, with inventory levels well above averages.
