Mauritania 2010 Global School-based Student Health Survey Summary
Overview
The 2010 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Mauritania assessed dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence among students in grades 1ere to 4eme du college, aged 13-15 years. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a response rate of 96% for schools, 73% for students, and 70% overall, involving 2063 participants.
Method
Sampling was probabilistic proportional to enrollment at the first stage. All eligible students in selected classes completed self-reported responses on computer-scannable sheets for comparability.
Key Findings
Nutritional Behaviors
- Underweight prevalence ranged from 4.7% (girls) to 11.0% (boys).
- Overweight exceeded 20% in most groups, with girls showing higher rates.
- Obesity was least common, affecting 1.8% to 4.3% of students.
Drug Use
- Early drug initiation occurred in 86.1% of ever-users.
- Lifetime marijuana use ranged from 4.6% to 15.8%.
Hygiene
- Tooth cleaning ≤1 time/day was common (13.4-18.5%).
- Inadequate handwashing post-toilet ranged from 14.9% to 33.7%.
Mental Health
- Suicide ideation affected 11.8% to 27.6% over 12 months.
- Suicide attempts occurred in 9.2% to 30.1%.
- Students with few close friends ranged from 4.5% to 11.3%.
Physical Activity
- Insufficient activity (<60 minutes/day, five+ days) affected 7.4% to 27.7%.
- PE class attendance was 19.5% to 40.3% weekly.
Protective Factors
- Unexcused absences were common (29.4-49.2%).
- Parental understanding and supervision varied from 30.0% to 40.6%.
Sexual Behaviors
- Ever had intercourse: 27.9% girls vs. 32.1% boys.
- Early first intercourse was uncommon, first-time condom use reported by 41.6% to 62.0%.
Tobacco Use
- Cigarette smoking prevalence was 16.8% among users.
- Early cigarette trial was high, most common before age 14.
Violence and Unintentional Injury
- Fighting incidents occurred in 38.9% to 69.6%.
- Injuries requiring treatment affected 44.5% to 63.3%.
- Bullying ranged from 35.0% to 58.0% over 30 days.
