Burden of Road Traffic Injuries

• In 2021, Peru reported 3,032 fatalities and an estimated 4,284 deaths per year (95% CI: 3,991–4,577), equivalent to a rate of 12.7 deaths per 100,000 population.
• Males accounted for 76% of fatalities, with 24% involving four-wheel vehicles, 33% motorcycles, 26% other vehicles or unknown, 2% powered 2- or 3-wheelers, and 15% pedestrians or cyclists.

Road User Behaviour

• Legislation: National laws cover drink-driving (BAC ≤0.05 g/dl for all drivers), helmet use for motorcycle riders, seat-belts, child restraints, and minimum rest periods for professional drivers.
• Speed Limits: Maximum urban speed limit is 50 km/h, rural 60 km/h, and motorway 100 km/h; authorities can modify limits.
• Enforcement: Manual enforcement for speeding and drink-driving occurs, with random breath testing.

Road Infrastructure

• Infrastructure standards consider safety, align with UN conventions, and include targets for speed reduction.

Road Vehicles

• Vehicles undergo testing in fatal crashes, with periodic technical inspections required.
