Turkey Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary (2009)
Overview:
The survey targeted students aged 13-15 in grades 7-10, using a two-stage cluster sampling design. A total of 3,317 students participated, with high response rates. Key areas covered include tobacco use prevalence, determinants such as access, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation, and school-based interventions.
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use: 29.6% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with current use at 11.9% (higher among boys). This includes 8.4% smoking cigarettes and 5.6% using other tobacco products. Initiation of smoking occurred early, with 30.5% starting before age 10.
- SHS Exposure: High exposure levels were reported; 48.6% lived in homes with smoking others, 79.9% were exposed outside the home, and 51.8% had smoking parents. Students generally recognize SHS harm and support bans in public places.
- Cessation: 68% of current smokers wanted to quit, with over 64% trying to stop in the past year and 68% receiving help.
- Media and Education: High awareness of anti-smoking messages (88.7% seen in media), while pro-tobacco advertising was noted less often (29.2%). Almost 70% had school classes discussing smoking dangers or peer reasons for smoking.
This summary highlights tobacco use among youth, the role of family and peer influences, and supports Turkey's comprehensive tobacco control needs.
