Summary of Poland-Mazovia Province Global Youth Tobacco Survey
Background and Methodology
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in Poland's Mazovia Province in 2009, targeting students aged 13-15 years. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design to produce representative data for the province. Sampling involved selecting schools with probability proportional to enrollment size and randomly selecting classes from those schools. Overall, the response rate was 72.9%, and 3282 students participated, including 2294 in the target age group. The survey collected data on tobacco use prevalence and five determinants.
Key Findings
Tobacco Use Prevalence
- 49.3% of students had ever smoked cigarettes.
- 23.0% currently used any tobacco product, including 18.7% who smoked cigarettes.
- 6.9% were daily cigarette smokers.
Initiation and Risk Factors
- 23.1% of ever smokers initiated tobacco use before age ten.
- 30.0% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
Access and Availability

- High cessation intent: 47.6% wanted to stop smoking, and 58.3% tried within the past year.

Media and School Influence
- Media awareness: 87.5% exposed to anti-smoking messages.
- School-based tobacco control: 38.4% received instruction on smoking dangers in the past year.
