East Timor GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)
Survey Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in East Timor was conducted in 2009 among students aged 13-15 using a two-stage cluster sampling design. It involved 890 students from classes 1, 2, and 3 across schools, with high response rates: school 96.0%, class 100.0%, student 80.5%, and overall 77.3%. The survey focused on tobacco use prevalence and determinants such as access/availability, price, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation, media, and school curriculum.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 46.7% of students had ever smoked cigarettes.
- 31.1% currently used any tobacco product (boys 39.7%, girls 23.8%).
- 24.6% currently smoked cigarettes (boys 38.2%, girls 14.6%).
- Twenty-three point six percent used other tobacco products.
- Initiation Risk: One of every five never-smokers is at risk of starting in the next year.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: High levels of SHS exposure; 60-70% of students live with smokers or are exposed outside home. Over half believe SHS is harmful, and most (over 50%) support smoking bans in public places.
- Access and Availability: Commonly smoked at home around others; many buy cigarettes easily, and brand-logged objects are visible.
- Media and Attitudes: Most students see anti-smoking messages (82.9% in last 30 days), but also pro-tobacco ads. Positive attitudes include a majority (over 50%) favoring public smoking bans.
Overall Implications
East Timor has high youth tobacco use, driven by factors including family exposure and media influences. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive school-based tobacco control programs.
