Bahamas Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary
Survey Overview:
- Conducted in 2009, targeting students ages 13-15 from grades 8, 9, 10, and 11.
- Used a two-stage cluster sampling design: schools selected proportionally by enrollment size, then classes randomly selected; all eligible students participated.
- Response rates: School response rate 92.0%, class 88.7%, student 42.8%, overall 34.9%; total participants: 1,471 students.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use:
- 20.3% had ever smoked cigarettes (males: 22.0%, females: 18.0%).
- 16.4% currently use any tobacco product (males: 17.8%, females: 15.1%).
- 5.6% currently smoke cigarettes (males: 6.6%, females: 4.6%).
- 12.8% currently use other tobacco products (males: 13.7%, females: 11.8%).
- 17.4% of never-smokers likely to start smoking next year.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 25.1% live in homes where others smoke in their presence.
- 51.0% are exposed to SHS outside the home.
- 72.6% believe SHS is harmful to them.
- 23.2% have one or more parents who smoke.
- High support for banning smoking in public places: 6.1% think smoking in public should be banned.
Knowledge and Attitudes:
- Majority (42.0%) believe smoking increases social friends, but 70.9% saw anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- 38.9% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards, 27.7% in newspapers/magazines in the past 30 days.
- Media exposure: 70.3% viewed anti-smoking messages; 46.4% viewed pro-cigarette ads overall.
- School-based factors: 47.4% taught about smoking dangers, 25.7% discussed reasons for smoking, 42.8% learned about tobacco effects.
Other determinants: Includes cessation help (59.9% received aid), parental smoking prevalence, and attitudes on quitting.
