Preface: Provides a brief and updated overview of WHO HPV LabNet activities, which is the sixth edition of the monthly newsletter.

VLP Validation Studies:
- WHO LabNet aimed to provide quality VLPs for standardized HPV serology assays due to lack of commercial sources.
- 5 labs donated purified VLPs; GRL/Sweden evaluated them, confirming good quality for HPV 16 and 18.
- These VLPs are now available under finalized request procedures.
- Associated ISs (IISS) for HPV 16 anti-serum and DNA testing (codes 05/1344 and 06/2022, 06/2066) have been made available through NIBSC, UK.
4th WHO HPV DNA Proficiency Panel: Distributed mid-2010 by GRL/Sweden after an application period. The panel included 43 purified HPV plasmid samples in human DNA with varying concentrations and an extraction control.

Assessment of a Candidate for WHO 1st IS for Anti-HPV 18 Serum:
- A collaborative study will assess a freeze-dried serum pool for standardization using international labs.
- Aims to define appropriate antibody units (IUs) and validate its use as an international standard.
3rd WHO HPV DNA Proficiency Panel Distribution & Results: Results showed varying proficiency among labs, with some fully compliant (6 labs) and others with specific challenges.

HPV Genotyping and Serology Training Workshop (Europe): March 2010, hosted by the RRL, focused on standardizing testing techniques and facilitating collaboration globally.
PPA/WHO HPV Genotyping Laboratory Performance Workshop: April 2010, Panama, aimed to harmonize testing in Latin America through hands-on training and experience sharing among researchers.

W. WHO Southeast Asia RRL: Thailand.
- Active in HPV surveillance, research, diagnostics, participating in national and international studies, and training other countries (e.g., Bhutan).
- Hosted workshops on HPV genotyping and serology and contributed to the LabNet newsletter.
WHO Africa RRL: South Africa.
- Focuses on molecular epidemiology to support policy development for vaccine introduction in collaboration with local and regional partners.
- Trained staff at national labs and participated in studies involving couples to understand HPV transmission linked with HIV.

Italian Lab (ISPO Prevention Institute): Monitors HPV prevalence, contributes to national vaccination programs, conducts research on antibodies and types prioritized for prevention. Coordinates QA programs and disseminates knowledge group-wide.
French Lab (CHU Reims): Established proficiency in HPV molecular diagnostics across multiple tests (e.g., PCR, HPV load testing). Involved in head and neck cancers.

Theme focused on cervical cancer eradication; aimed to bring together researchers, clinicians, pathologists, and policymakers.
Participants covered topics like HPV vaccination coverage demonstrations globally (Australia saw reductions in warts post-vaccination).

Discussed new evidence supporting current policies and vaccine efficacy in preventing HPV-related cancers despite evolving recommendations.
Noted data supports quadrivalent and bivalent vaccines efficacy for preventing CIN2/3 and precancerous lesions. Herd immunity documented in Australia.

Aims to review LabNet activities and discuss diagnostics and serological surveillance for HPV and vaccination impact.

Contributions due within four months. Topics include local initiatives, pertinent projects, published data (especially genotype-specific sero-surveillance/impact studies), and suggestions for newsletter content.
