WHO HPV LabNet Meeting: Standardization of HPV Assays and Role in Vaccine Introduction
Background
Established in 2006, the WHO HPV Laboratory Network (LabNet) aims to improve HPV surveillance and vaccination impact monitoring through standardized laboratory services. By 2008, two global and seven regional reference laboratories had been designated.
Meeting Objectives
- Review 2007 activities and plan 2008–2009.
- Harmonize HPV assay standards for monitoring disease burden and vaccine impact.
- Strengthen regional laboratory capacity and address gaps in HPV testing.
Key Discussions
- HPV Testing Challenges: Issues with assay variability, reagent costs, and the need for better DNA and serology standardization emerged. Solutions include proficiency testing, standardized protocols, and affordable reagents.
- Surveillance Goals: Surveillance must target HPV prevalence, vaccine impact, and cervical cancer incidence to inform policy decisions, especially in low-resource settings.
- Capacity Building: Training programs and global reference materials are crucial for expanding LabNet activities to national laboratories. Collaboration with public health authorities and industry was emphasized.
Recommendations
- Prioritize capacity-building at regional laboratories.
- Revise Terms of Reference to align with current testing needs.
- Conduct annual proficiency studies and develop quality indicators.
- Accelerate the development of WHO International Standards for HPV DNA and serology.
Future Work
- A second HPV DNA proficiency study and serology draft manual are planned for 2008.
- Expanded training programs to build national laboratory capacity.
- Enhanced global partnerships to support HPV vaccine implementation in low- and middle-income countries.
