Methodology
- Conducted in 2008 as a school-based survey using a two-stage cluster sample design.
- Targeted grades 7th to 10th.
- Response rates: School (78.0%), class (100.0%), student (84.3%), overall (65.8%).
- 1,305 students participated.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Prevalence:
- 13.3% ever smoked cigarettes (Male: 19.1%, Female: 6.4%).
- 26.1% currently use any tobacco product (Male: 30.8%, Female: 20.0%).
- 7.1% currently smoke cigarettes (Male: 11.6%, Female: 1.6%).
- 21.6% currently use other tobacco products (Male: 23.4%, Female: 18.9%).
- Highlight: Knowledge and Attitudes:
- 36.3% believe boys who smoke have more friends (34.1% believe for girls).
- 35.2% think boys who smoke look more attractive (35.1% for girls).
- Highlight: Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 27.7% live in homes where others smoke.
- 52.3% are exposed outside the home.
- 71.6% support banning smoking in public places.
- Highlight: Cessation:
- 85.5% of current smokers want to stop.
- 80.4% tried to stop in the past year.
- Highlight: Media and Advertising:
- 70.9% were exposed to anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- 68.3% and 64.6% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and in print media, respectively.
- Highlight: School:
- 53.7% received classroom education on smoking dangers.
- Limited data on discussion reasons for smoking.
