Cook Islands Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary (GYTS)

The GYTS surveyed 601 students aged 13-15 in 2008, with high response rates (91.1% overall), assessing tobacco use prevalence and determinants like availability, secondhand smoke (SHS), media, and school factors.

Key Findings:

• High tobacco use rates: 30.0% currently smoke cigarettes, 35.1% use any tobacco product, and 60.5% have ever smoked.
• SHS exposure is severe, with 61.9% living in homes with smoking others and 73.8% exposed outside home.
• Student attitudes: Many believe smoking increases friends or attractiveness, and 82.6% of current smokers want to quit.
• Barriers include parental influence (68.7% have parents who smoke), media exposure (79.9% see anti-smoking ads but few pro-tobacco ads), and school education efforts (53.0% taught about tobacco dangers).
• Intervention potential: School-based and media strategies could address high smoking initiation (20.8% never smokers likely to start).
