Summary of Mauritius Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Ages 13-15

Methodology

The survey used a two-stage cluster sample design: schools selected proportionally to enrollment size, then classes randomly chosen, with high response rates (school: 96%, student: 82.5%, overall: 79.2%). It included 1,286 students from Forms II, III, and IV in 2008.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

28.4% of students ever smoked cigarettes.
13.7% currently smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys.
11.2% of never smokers intend to initiate smoking next year.

Highlights and Determinants

Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is high: 36.1% live in homes where smoking occurs, and 73.6% are exposed outside home.
Over 70% view SHS as harmful, supporting public bans (74.5% favor smoking bans in public places).
Parental smoking: 39.9% have one or more parents who smoke.
Social factors: 36.3% believe smoking increases popularity, but less on attractiveness.
Media: 84.9% saw anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, while 51.4% saw pro-cigarette ads.
Advertising: 8.4% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco representatives.

Cessation and Awareness

62.3% want to stop smoking, with 58.5% having quit attempts in the past year and 76.1% receiving help.
Education: 62.9% learned about smoking dangers in school, with discussions on reasons to smoke and tobacco effects widespread.
