Peru - Ica City GYTS Summary

Overview

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in Ica City, Peru, in 2007 among students aged 13-15 in Secondary 1-5. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with probability proportional to enrollment size for schools, random selection of classes, and all eligible students in selected classes. Response rates were 100% for schools, 90.7% for classes, 80.9% for students, and 73.4% overall, with 1,853 students participating. The survey assessed tobacco use prevalence and determinants such as access/availability, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media and advertising, and school-based interventions as part of a potential comprehensive tobacco control program.

Key Findings

• Tobacco Use: 18.9% of students currently use any tobacco product (e.g., cigarettes or others), with 15.5% smoking cigarettes and 4.1% using other tobacco products. Ever smoking cigarettes was reported by 45.6%.
• Exposure to Secondhand Smoke: 25.0% live in homes where others smoke; 45.4% are exposed to SHS outside the home. Over 25% have one or more parents who smoke, and more than 40% are exposed to smoke in public places.
• Knowledge and Attitudes: 81.4% have seen anti-smoking media messages, with 87.1% supporting public smoking bans and 59.1% believing SHS is harmful. 27.8% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year, while only 13.7% think smoking enhances social life or attractiveness.
• Cessation: 73.1% of current smokers want to stop, and 76.4% have tried to quit in the past year. 68.5% have received help to stop smoking.
• Media and Advertising: High exposure to pro-tobacco ads, with 64.1% seeing billboard ads and 65.8% seeing ads in newspapers/magazines in the past 30 days. 11.0% were offered free cigarettes, and 7.1% have objects with cigarette brand logos.
• School Component: 56.8% were taught about smoking dangers, 47.4% discussed smoking reasons at age, and 48.3% were educated on tobacco effects during the past year.
