Mali GYTS Summary ( Ages 13-15 )
Survey Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Mali was conducted in 2008 using a two-stage cluster sampling method among students in grades 6-9. With a 88.3% overall response rate from 2,135 participants, it provided representative data on tobacco use prevalence and determinants for youth tobacco control programs.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 29.0% (higher among males at 44.6% compared to 10.1% for females).
- Current tobacco use: 16.6% overall (males: 23.1%, females: 8.8%).
- Current cigarette smoking: 10.4% (males: 17.4%, females: 2.5%).
- Current use of other tobacco products: 9.0% (males: 10.7%, females: 7.2%).
- Initiation risk: 5.6% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
Determinants
- Access and availability: Most cigarettes are bought in stores, with no refusals based on age; 20.9% usually smoke at home.
- Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure: High exposure, with 50.3% believing SHS is harmful, but over half live in smoking environments.
- Attitudes and beliefs: A majority (88.3%) support banning smoking in public places; however, 6.8% have friends who smoke.
- Media and advertising: Significant exposure to both anti-smoking messages (64.4%) and pro-cigarette ads (33.2%).
- School-based education: Most students (48.2%) learned about smoking dangers in school.
Key Findings
- High prevalence of current and ever tobacco use, with strong gender disparities.
- Counteracted by widespread support for public smoking bans and some positive educational influences; but contradicted by high access and low cessation awareness.
