Kyrgyzstan Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary (Ages 13-15)
-
Survey Overview: This report analyzes the 2008 Kyrgyzstan GYTS, a school-based survey of grades 7-9 students (n=4,038), with high response rates (93.2%). Data provides prevalence and determinants of tobacco use, including access, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation intentions, media advertising, and school-based education.
-
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 17.7% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, 7.2% currently used any tobacco product (including 4.4% smoking cigarettes and 2.6% using other forms like waterpipes), and 28.7% initiated smoking before age ten. Boys had higher rates than girls.
- Access and Availability: Students easily accessed tobacco, with 64.7% buying cigarettes in stores without being refused due to age, and an average of 1.0% daily cigarette smokers.
- SHS Exposure: High exposure was noted, with 33.4% living in homes where others smoked present, 57.7% surrounding others who smoke in external settings, and 91.5% endorsing public smoking bans; additionally, 52.3% had one or more smoking parents.
- Cessation Intent: Most current smokers (86.2%) wanted to quit; 48.2% had attempted cessation in the past year, and 74.9% received help to stop.
- Media and Advertising: Students frequently encountered both anti-smoking messages (93.4% in media) and pro-tobacco ads (70.5% on billboards, 55.2% in print); only 18.2% had a cigarette brand logo item, and 18.9% were offered free cigarettes.
- School Elements: Some students received classroom education on smoking dangers (58.4%), reasons for youth smoking (12.6%), or effects of tobacco use (64.8%), supported in tobacco control efforts.
Overall, the survey highlights a significant youth tobacco problem in Kyrgyzstan, with strong public support for smoke-free policies and high cessation desire among users. Contact Aisha Tokobaeva for further details via email.
