GATS Costa Rica 2015 Summary

Tobacco Use

• Overall: 9.1% of adults use tobacco (including smoking and smokeless), with 13.4% of men and 4.5% of women using tobacco products.
• Smoking: 8.9% current tobacco smokers, including 8.7% cigarette smokers (13.0% men, 4.3% women) and 0.1% smokeless tobacco users.
• Daily Smoking: 5.8% of adults are daily tobacco smokers, with 5.7% being daily cigarette smokers.

Cessation

• Quitting Plans: 73.0% of current smokers planned or were thinking about quitting.
• Quit Attempts: 58.6% of past-year smokers attempted to quit in the last 12 months.
• Quit Ratio: 56.7% of ever daily smokers have quit smoking.

Secondhand Smoke

• Workplace Exposure: 6.3% of adults exposed to tobacco smoke at work.
• Home Exposure: 4.9% exposed monthly at home.
• Restaurant Exposure: 7.9% exposed in restaurants over the past 30 days.

Economics

• Cigarette Spending: Average monthly expenditure of 19,370 colones per smoker.
• Street Vendors: 5.4% of smokers purchased cigarettes from street vendors.

Media

• Anti-Tobacco Advertising: 66.1% of adults noticed anti-cigarette information on TV or radio.
• Cigarette Marketing: 14.9% noticed marketing in stores, and 21.9% noticed other promotions or sponsorships.

Knowledge, Attitudes & Perceptions

• Health Beliefs: 97.8% believe smoking causes serious illness, 95.8% believe secondhand smoke harms non-smokers.
• Policy Support: 85.1% support increasing tobacco taxes, 93.1% support smoke-free public places.
• Smokeless Tobacco Knowledge: 70.5% believe smokeless tobacco use causes serious illness.

Electronic Cigarettes

• Awareness: 47.5% of adults have heard of electronic cigarettes.
• Usage: 1.3% current users.

Additional Findings

• Initiation Age: Average age at smoking start among daily smokers is 16.1 years.
