Background

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a standard protocol for monitoring adult tobacco use in Mexico. Conducted in 2009 and 2015, it was carried out by the National Institute of Public Health under the National Commission against Addictions. The surveys used multistage stratified cluster sampling, with a high response rate, covering 13,617 and 14,664 interviews respectively.

Highlights

• Current smoking prevalence remained unchanged between 2009 and 2015 (15.9% in 2009 to 16.4% in 2015 overall); daily smokers consumed fewer cigarettes, averaging 7.7 in 2015 vs 9.3 in 2009.
