Overview: This report summarizes data from the 2002 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Costa Rica, focusing on tobacco use among students aged 13-15 years. It was a school-based survey using a two-stage cluster sampling method.

Sample Design and Participation: The survey involved 2,698 students from grades 7, 8, and 9 in 2002. First stage: schools selected proportionally to enrollment size; second stage: classes randomly chosen, with all eligible students invited. Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 42% had ever smoked cigarettes; boys 43%, girls 40.8%.
- 18.7% currently use any tobacco product; boys 18.6%, girls 18.5%.
- 16.4% currently smoke cigarettes; boys 15.7%, girls 16.8%.
- 5.5% currently use other tobacco products; boys 6.7%, girls 4.2%.

Risk Factors and Attitudes:
- 20.3% of boys and 17.5% of girls think smokers have more friends.
- 7.2% of boys and 3.6% of girls think smokers look more attractive.
- 37.4% of students live in homes where others smoke; 81.6% support banning smoking in public places.
- 74.9% believe secondhand smoke is harmful; 29.4% are exposed daily to smokers at home, and 51% outside home.
- 28.1% have one or more parents who smoke.

Quitting and Help:
- 52.8% of current smokers want to quit; 59.1% tried to stop in the past year; 21% received help.

Media and Advertising:
- 87.1% were exposed to anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- 90.3% were exposed to pro-cigarette ads on billboards, and 82.2% in newspapers/magazines, in the past 30 days.
- 12.7% had items with cigarette brand logos recently.

- 46.2% were taught about smoking dangers.
- 34.9% discussed reasons for youth smoking in class.
- 42.7% learned about effects of tobacco use.
