Overview: The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) monitors tobacco consumption and control policies in adults, providing comparable data for Costa Rica to fulfill WHO obligations.
Tobacco Consumption: 9.1% of adults (279,000) smoked tobacco overall, with higher rates in men (13.6%) than women (4.5%). Urban areas had 9.6% smokers, rural 7.1%. Quitting plans or attempts are common.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 6.3% of adults were exposed at work, 4.9% at home, and 7.9% in restaurants.
Economics and Media: Average monthly spend on cigarettes is 19,370 colones; 5.4% bought from illegal sources. High awareness of anti-tobacco messages through media.
Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions: 97.8% believe smoking causes serious diseases; 95.8% see SHS risks. Strong support for tobacco taxation increases and smoke-free laws.
Cessation and E-cigarettes: 73% of smokers plan to quit; around 58.6% attempted cessation in the past year, with some using e-cigarettes (1.3% current users).
