GATS Overview
The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a standardized global method for monitoring adult tobacco use and tracking tobacco control indicators. In Qatar (2013), it provided nationally representative data, helping to strengthen tobacco control programs and fulfill WHO FCTC obligations through comparable data.
Tobacco Use Prevalence
- Overall: 12.1% of adults (51,000) smoked tobacco, with higher rates among men (20.2%) and lower among women (3.1%).
- Qatari vs. Non-Qatari: Qatari adults had 10.5% tobacco use (21.3% men, 0.6% women), while Non-Qatari had 12.9% (19.6% men, 4.6% women).
- Cigarette Smokers: 10.2% of adults smoked cigarettes (17.9% men, 1.8% women); Qatari had lower rates (9.0%) compared to Non-Qatari (10.9%).
- Shisha Smokers: 3.4% of adults smoked shisha, with higher rates among men (4.9%) and lower among women (1.6%); shisha use was more common among Non-Qatari men (4.8%).
- Smokeless Tobacco Users: Only 0.7% of adults used smokeless tobacco (Qatari: 0.7%, Non-Qatari: 0.7%); no use among women.
Quit Attempts
- Smokers: 38.2% of smokers attempted to quit in the past 12 months, with similar rates among Qatari (35.3%) and Non-Qatari (39.4%).
- Smokeless Users: Around 36.3% of smokeless users attempted to quit.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- Workplace Exposure: 12.0% of indoor workers were exposed to tobacco smoke at work, with higher rates among Non-Qatari.
- Home Exposure: 16.8% of adults were exposed to secondhand smoke at home.
- Restaurant Exposure: 25.9% of adults were exposed while visiting restaurants.
Media, Knowledge, and Awareness
- Awareness: 64.4% noticed anti-cigarette media messages, and 45.9% noticed anti-shisha messages.
- Tobacco Marketing: High exposure to cigarette marketing (30.3%), but lower for shisha (12.0%).
- Health Beliefs: Strong consensus that tobacco use causes serious illness: 96.0% linked smoking to health risks, 90.9% to shisha, and 80.9% to smokeless tobacco.
Economics and Policy Support
- Affordability: Average cost for 20 cigarettes was QR 10.2; cigarettes cost 0.3% of GDP, indicating affordability.
- Tax Support: 85.9% of adults supported increasing tobacco taxes to discourage use and fund control programs.
Key Objectives
GATS enhances national capacity for tobacco control, supports policy evaluation, and generates data for WHO FCTC compliance, emphasizing the need for advertising bans and tax increases to reduce tobacco prevalence.
