STEPS Survey Summary: Chronic Disease Risk Factors in Algeria
Core Content
The STEPS (STEPS Survey for Chronic Disease Risk Factors) survey in Algeria was conducted between September and October 2003. It was a population-based study targeting adults aged 25–64 years, aiming to assess key risk factors for chronic diseases. The survey was structured into three steps:
- Step 1: Collection of socio-demographic and behavioral data, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, and physical activity.
- Step 2: Physical measurements such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and blood pressure.
- Step 3: Biochemical measurements, including fasting blood glucose and total blood cholesterol levels.
A stratified cluster sampling design was employed to ensure the data was representative of the target population. A total of 4,102 adults participated in the survey.
