报告摘要
The STEPS survey conducted in 2011 in Maldives/Malé assessed chronic disease risk factors among adults aged 15-64 years. The study was a population-based survey with a multistage sample design, involving 1787 participants and an 89% response rate. It included two steps: STEP 1 collected sociodemographic and behavioral data, such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, and physical activity; STEP 2 involved physical measurements like height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, and blood pressure.
Key findings from STEP 1 revealed high rates of tobacco use among males, low fruit and vegetable consumption, and limited physical activity. Alcohol abstinence was common, particularly among males. In STEP 2, a significant proportion of adults were overweight or obese, with elevated blood pressure rates observed across all ages. The survey identified specific risk factors for chronic diseases, including current daily smoking, inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, low physical activity, and abnormal blood pressure or high BMI.
Overall, about half of the population had three or more risk factors, with higher prevalence in older age groups. This highlights the need for targeted interventions in areas like tobacco control, nutrition, and physical activity promotion.
