Survey Overview

• A school-based survey of students aged 13-15 in Congo conducted in 2009, using a two-stage cluster sampling method with a sample size of 1,141 students.
• Response rates: School (96.7%), class (100.0%), student (72.1%), overall (69.7%).

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

• 17.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys (24.0%) than girls (9.9%).
• 24.3% currently use any tobacco product, including 8.2% who smoke cigarettes and 20.0% who use other forms.
• 22.1% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking.

Determinants of Tobacco Use

• Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS): 44.4% exposed outside home; 78.6% support banning smoking in public places; high awareness that SHS is harmful.
• Access: 37.7% buy cigarettes from stores; 43.7% usually smoke at home.
• Cessation: 88.7% of current smokers want to stop; 78.4% have tried to quit in the past year.
• Media: 58.0% seen anti-smoking messages; 41.1% seen pro-cigarette ads on billboards; 32.8% seen pro-cigarette ads in media.
• School factors: 41.5% taught about smoking dangers; 19.3% discussed reasons for smoking in class.
