This Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) fact sheet summarizes data from a school-based survey conducted in 2004 among 13-15-year-olds in four Cuban provinces. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates, involving 1,667 students.

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 13.0% (boys 14.1%, girls 11.8%).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 7.0% (boys 7.4%, girls 6.5%).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 4.6% (boys 4.4%, girls 4.8%).
- Currently use other tobacco products: 2.7% (boys 3.4%, girls 1.9%).
- Initiation likelihood: 7.0% of never smokers are expected to start smoking next year.

Attitudes and Beliefs:
- Many believe smoking enhances social life: 5.3% think smoking makes boys friends, 5.2% for girls; 3.6% find smoking boys attractive, 4.5% for girls.
- Health perceptions: 73.9% believe secondhand smoke (SHS) is harmful to them, and 85.9% support banning smoking in public places.
- Social influences: 47.0% have at least one parent who smokes; 7.3% have most friends smoking.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 52.0% of students live in homes where smoking occurs in their presence; 56.7% are exposed outdoors.
- Overall SHS exposure is high, with strong attitudes against it.

Access and Availability:
- 26.7% smoke or have smoked at home; 18.8% buy cigarettes from stores; 7.6% own items with cigarette brand logos.

Media and Advertising:
- 96.2% see anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days; over 50% see pro-cigarette ads on billboards, newspapers, or magazines.

School-Based Factors:
- 92.1% were taught about smoking dangers; 82.2% discussed reasons for peer smoking; 91.9% learned effects of tobacco use.
