Belarus GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)

Introduction:
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Belarus, conducted in 2004 for students aged 13-15, aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence and key determinants to inform comprehensive tobacco control programs. The study used a two-stage cluster sampling method with high response rates (86.5% overall), involving 3,909 students from grades 7-9 across schools in Belarus.

Key Findings:

• Tobacco Use Prevalence:

  • 62.5% of students had ever smoked cigarettes; this increased to 70.2% among boys and 54.8% among girls.
  • 26.5% were current cigarette smokers (boys: 31.2%, girls: 21.7%); daily smoking was reported by 9.7% (boys: 12.3%, girls: 7.1%).
  • 26.9% used any tobacco product, with 11.7% smoking cigars.
  • Young onset: 30.3% initiated smoking before age 10, and 48.9% of never smokers intended to start next year (higher in girls: 52.6%).

• Access and Availability:

  • Easy access: 9.5% smoked at home, and 56.4% of those buying cigarettes were not age-refused; parents smoking was common (59.8%) and friends smoking affected 23.5%.

• Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):

  • High exposure: 75.3% lived in homes with SHS, and 90.1% were exposed outside homes – beliefs on harm varied, with 44.4% thinking SHS is harmful.

• Cessation and Quitting Intentions:

  • High cessation desire: 72.1% wanted to quit, with 77.4% having attempted in the past year; 73.8% received help to stop.

• Media and Advertising:

  • Anti-smoking messages were visible: 88.9% saw TV ads against smoking, and 64.1% saw billboard anti-smoking ads, though pro-cigarette ads were also prevalent.

• School-Based Interventions:

  • Education occurred: 79.8% learned about smoking dangers in school, and 69.5% discussed reasons for smoking among peers.

Implications:
This data highlights severe youth tobacco use and exposure issues in Belarus, suggesting the need for stronger tobacco control policies, public smoking bans, parental education, and school-based prevention programs.
