Mexico - Toluca GYTS Summary

The Mexico - Toluca Global Youth Tobacco Survey represents a comprehensive study conducted in 2005 on students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design with a school enrollment-based selection. A total of 1,532 students participated, with high response rates of 94.5% overall. The survey examined prevalence of cigarette and tobacco use, along with determinants such as access/availability, price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media advertising, and school curriculum influences.

Key highlights include:

• High tobacco use prevalence: 60.5% had ever smoked cigarettes, 32.7% currently use any tobacco product, 29.4% currently smoke cigarettes, and 9.4% currently use other tobacco products.
• SHS exposure is widespread, with 50.4% reporting at least one parent who smokes and 53% exposed to smoke outside home.
• Attitudes show 84.7% believing smoking should be banned from public places, but media messaging is mixed, with 84.8% seeing anti-smoking ads versus significant pro-cigarette advertising exposure.
• Cessation ambitions are strong, with 61.1% of current smokers wanting to stop, and 63.6% having attempted cessation.
• School-based interventions were present, with 63.2% taught about smoking dangers and 33.8% discussed smoking reasons.
