Survey Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey for Romania was a school-based survey of students aged 13-15 in grades 6 through 10 conducted in 2004. It assessed tobacco use prevalence and key determinants, with 2,504 students participating and a 58% student response rate.
Methodology
- A two-stage cluster sampling design was used, with schools selected based on enrollment size.
- Response rates: 100% school, 100% class, and 58% student participation.
- Data collected on tobacco use, access, price, secondhand smoke exposure, media advertising, cessation, and school curriculum.
Key Findings
Tobacco Use Prevalence
- 49.9% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (Boys 60.2%, Girls 40.7%).
- 18.3% currently used any tobacco product (Boys 22.2%, Girls 14.8%).
- 17.6% currently smoked cigarettes, with 3.3% being daily smokers.
- 29.9% initiated smoking before age ten.
- 28.5% of never smokers were likely to initiate smoking in the next year.
Access and Availability
- 90.4% lived in homes where others smoked in their presence.
- 59.9% bought cigarettes in stores with no age refusal issues.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 90.4% were exposed to SHS at home.
- 81.5% were exposed outside the home.
- 86.1% supported banning smoking in public places; 63.7% believed SHS is harmful.
Cessation
- 55.4% of current smokers wanted to quit.
- 76.3% had tried to stop smoking in the past year.
Media Exposure
- Students saw anti-smoking messages (87.7% on TV, 60.3% on billboards, 53.6% in print) and pro-tobacco messages (e.g., 78.6% on billboards, 72.7% in print ads).
- 21.8% had objects with cigarette logos; some were offered free cigarettes.
School Factors
- 61.6% received classroom education on smoking dangers.
- 52.4% discussed reasons for youth smoking, and 54.4% learned about the effects of tobacco use.
