Survey Overview
- Methodology: Two-stage cluster sample design, with schools selected proportional to enrollment size, and classes randomly chosen. Total participants: 5,723 students, including 3,299 aged 13-15. High response rates: school (100.0%), student (93.2%), class (99.7%), overall (92.9%).
- Focus: Age 13-15 students in grades VI, VII, VIII, conducted in 2008.
Key Findings
Tobacco Use Prevalence
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 31.3% (Boys: 30.7%, Girls: 31.9%).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 6.3% (Boys: 6.6%, Girls: 5.9%).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 5.1% (Boys: 5.7%, Girls: 4.4%).
- Daily smoking: 1.0% (Boys: 0.9%, Girls: 0.9%).
- Past 30 days, other tobacco use: 3.6%.
- Early initiation: High percentage initiated smoking before age 10 (39.6%).
- Future risk: 16.0% of never smokers likely to start smoking next year.
Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure
- High exposure: 76.8% live in homes where others smoke while present.
- 69.9% exposed to SHS outside home.
- Attitudes: 89.8% support banning smoking in public places; 67.4% perceive SHS as harmful.
- Parental and peer smoking: Students with smoking parents or friends show lower support for public bans.
Cessation and Quit Attempts
- Many current smokers want to quit: 41.2% intend to stop, 75.6% tried cessation in the past year.
- Help received: 65.0% got assistance stopping.
- Nicotine dependence: 7.9% regularly crave cigarettes in the morning.
Media and Advertising
- Awareness: 89.8% exposed to anti-smoking media; 47.4% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards.
- Other exposures: 58.2% viewed pro-cigarette ads in print media; 20.2% offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.
- Education: 56.0% taught about smoking dangers in school; 41.2% discussed age-specific reasons for smoking; 52.5% learned tobacco effects in class.
