Survey Overview

The Mexico-Saltillo GYTS was a school-based survey conducted in 2008, targeting students aged 13-15 in grades 1st to 3rd of Secondary and 1st of High School. A two-stage cluster sampling method was used to generate representative data for the Saltillo region in Mexico. The response rates were high, with an overall response rate of 80.9%. Approximately 1,463 students participated.

Youth Tobacco Use Prevalence

• Currently, 54.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes.
• 23.7% used any tobacco product, including cigarettes or others.
• Specifically, 19.0% smoked cigarettes currently.
• A high 24.1% of never smokers reported likely to initiate smoking next year.

Determinants and Attitudes

• Access and Availability: Most students (e.g., 50.3%) who bought cigarettes in stores faced no refusal based on age; limited school-based tobacco control coverage.
• Secondhand Smoke (SHS): Nearly 40% lived in homes where others smoked, and 58.2% were exposed elsewhere; most students (86.8%) believed smoking should be banned in public places.
• Knowledge and Media: High exposure to anti-smoking messages (e.g., 89.4% saw such ads); positive attitudes against smoking were common.

Conclusions and Highlights

The survey indicates high youth tobacco use prevalence, significant exposure to tobacco-related risks, and supportive attitudes toward tobacco control measures. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive school-based tobacco prevention programs.
