Summary of Hungary Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS)
Background
The Hungary GYTS (Global Youth Tobacco Survey) was conducted in 2008 among 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students (aged 13-15) to assess tobacco use prevalence and key determinants. Using a two-stage cluster sampling design with a high response rate, it covered 3,861 students, of whom 3,139 were aged 13-15.
Key Findings
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: Approximately 58% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with 23.2% being current users. Daily smoking was reported by 5.9% of students.
- Initiation and Access: About 18% of ever-smokers started before age 10, and 47.9% of students had easy access to cigarettes, with most not facing age-based refusal when purchasing.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure: High exposure was common, with 72.6% exposed in external settings and 76.9% supporting public smoking bans. Over 40% lived in homes with smoking parents or others present.
- Cessation and Awareness: Among current smokers, nearly two-thirds (66.3%) had attempted to quit in the past year, and 41% expressed a desire to stop. However, few received help for cessation.
- Media and Advertising: A high proportion (94.1%) were exposed to anti-smoking media messages, including discussions in schools; one-sixth had objects with cigarette brand logos.
- School-Based Education: School programs covered key topics, with over half learning about smoking dangers, and discussions on peer influences.
This survey highlights significant tobacco use and related determinants among youth in Hungary, suggesting a need for comprehensive prevention programs focusing on access reduction, education, and cessation support.
