报告摘要
Guatemala GYTS (2008) surveyed youth ages 13-15 on tobacco use and determinants.
Survey methodology: School-based, two-stage cluster sampling with high response rates (96.2% for schools, 98.9% for classes, 83.6% for students, 79.6% overall). Involved 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, with 3,838 participants.
Key findings:
- Tobacco use prevalence: 16.6% current use any tobacco product (boys: 19.7%, girls: 13.3%), 11.4% smoke cigarettes (boys: 13.7%, girls: 9.1%).
- Determinants: Access easy (51.7% buy cigarettes without age refusal), SHS exposure common (23.1% live in smoking homes, 40.8% exposed outside), positive attitudes (e.g., 84.6% support public smoking bans), media influence (76.6% saw anti-smoking messages, 81.0% saw pro-cigarette ads); 57.7% discussed tobacco dangers in school.
Notably, high SHS exposure (almost half exposed to smoke outside home) and strong youth desire to quit smoking (60.1% of smokers want to stop).
