Guyana GYTS Summary (2004)

Background

The Guyana Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2004 among 13-15-year-old students. It used a two-stage cluster sample design with a high overall response rate of 78.6%, involving 890 participants. Data collected covered tobacco use prevalence, determinants, and school-based factors.

Prevalence Rates

Ever smoked cigarettes: 27.7% (males: 34.7%, females: 20.4%)
Currently use any tobacco product: 14.9% (males: 17.6%, females: 12.2%)
Currently smoke cigarettes: 8.1% (males: 11.0%, females: 5.4%)
Currently use other tobacco products: 8.3% (males: 9.1%, females: 7.7%)

Determinants of Tobacco Use

Initiation factors: 9.9% of never smokers likely to start smoking next year.
Access and availability: 45.0% smoke at home, 34.4% buy cigarettes from stores.
Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure: 61.1% exposed to others smoking in public places; 33.4% exposed in homes.
Parental influence: 33.7% have at least one parent who smokes.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Media

Attitudes: 32.6% believe smoking increases social acceptance; 11.5% think it enhances attractiveness.
Media exposure: 77.8% seen anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days; 69.8% seen pro-cigarette ads (billboards and newspapers).
School curriculum: 49.9% taught about smoking dangers; 32.8% discussed smoking reasons in class.
