Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) Summary

The Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in CNMI in 2004 targeted students aged 13-15, with a response rate of 55.2% overall. Key findings include high tobacco use prevalence: 70.1% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, and 53.4% currently use any tobacco product. Specifically, 29.1% smoke cigarettes, and 45.3% use other tobacco products. Environmental tobacco smoke exposure is widespread, with 59.3% living in homes where others smoke.

Highlights also show that 79.4% of current smokers want to quit, and 72.5% reported seeing anti-smoking media messages. School-based education on smoking dangers reached 56.2% of students, and 35.4% learned refusal techniques. Access to tobacco is common, with 51.3% buying cigarettes despite some refusal, and nearly half (49.8%) think secondhand smoke is harmful.
