Mobile Money in Uganda and its Impact on Cash Perception and Financial Inclusion: This study examines mobile money adoption's effect on perceptions of cash and related financial behaviors using Uganda's FinScope Survey data. Key findings include that mobile money users perceive cash as riskier, less prefer carrying large amounts of cash, and engage more in remittances, savings, and borrowing. Propensity score matching addressed selection bias, confirming these results after robustness checks.
-
Financial Inclusion Implications: Mobile money usage correlates with higher transactional activity and larger savings/borrowing amounts, though impacts on remittance value vary. Digital payment innovation could promote financial inclusion, especially in rural areas, but cash's role as a store of value may persist due to factors like network issues and lack of reliable electricity.
-
Policy Recommendations: Support expansion of mobile money services through improved infrastructure and coordination, while considering broader impacts on monetary policy and financial stability for future research.
