Methodology
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Iraq-Baghdad (ages 13-15) utilized a two-stage cluster sample design with high response rates: school response rate 100.0%, class response rate 100.0%, student response rate 94.0%. A total of 3,604 students participated, representing the 2008 data. This survey examined tobacco use prevalence and determinants such as access, price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media, and advertising.
Key Findings
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- 13.4% of students currently use any tobacco product; boys (13.9%) are more likely than girls (11.6%).
- Cigarette smoking: 3.2% current users (boys: 3.3%, girls: 2.7%).
- Shisha smoking: 2.3% current users (boys: 2.6%, girls: 1.3%).
- Other tobacco products: 11.3% current users (boys: 11.7%, girls: 9.9%).
Determinants of Tobacco Use
- Access and Availability: 50.9% buy cigarettes from stores; 39.6% smoke at home.
- SHS Exposure: 32.3% live in homes where others smoke; 29.2% are exposed in public places.
- Cessation: 84.8% of current smokers have received help to quit.
- Media and Advertising: 67.9% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards; 59.8% saw ads in newspapers/magazines; 59.6% saw anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- Knowledge and Attitudes: 70.7% of students think smoking should be banned in public; 39.3% have at least one smoking parent.
School-Based Factors
- 41.8% of students received classroom instruction on smoking dangers during the past year.
This summary highlights the high rates of tobacco use and related determinants among youth in Baghdad.
