This school-based survey was conducted in 2008.

Prevalence & Initiation

Has ever smoked any tobacco: 26.0% (Boys: 27.7%, Girls: 24.2%)
Currently uses any tobacco: 11.8% (Boys: 11.9%, Girls: 11.7%)
Currently smokes cigarettes: 9.8% (Boys: 9.7%, Girls: 9.8%)
Currently smokes cigars: 2.3% (Boys: 2.6%, Girls: 2.0%)
Initiates smoking before age ten: 16.3% (Boys: 19.7%, Girls: 12.6%)
Likely to initiate smoking within one year for never-smokers: 16.7% (Boys: 15.4%, Girls: 17.9%)

Secondhand Smoke Exposure

Exposed to SHS at home: 65.1% (58.8% have smoking parents, 14.6% have all friends smoking)
Exposed to SHS outside home: 66.0%
Was told smoking harms others: 73.7% think smoke from others is harmful
Supports public smoking ban: 86.4% want smoking banned in public places, 84.8% think it should be totally banned

Cessation & Attitudes

Media & Environment

Exposure to anti-smoking media: 92.4% saw in past 30 days
Exposure to pro-cigarette media:
- Billboards: 58.4%
- Newspapers/magazines: 70.2% (45.1% saw ads in past year publications too)
Access: 65.1% live with smokers, 81.4% buy cigarettes without age refusal
High visibility: 24.1% have objects (like apparel, bags) with cigarette logos
Free offers: 10.8% were offered free cigarettes in past 30 days
School education: 44.0% taught about smoking dangers / 40.2% discussed age-specific smoking reasons / 45.1% taught tobacco effects within past year classes
