Survey Overview

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Viet Nam - Tuenquang includes data from students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates. A total of 435 students participated in this 2003 school-based survey focusing on grades 8, 9, and 10.

Key Findings

• Tobacco Use Prevalence: Approximately 4.6% of students currently use any tobacco product, with boys reporting higher rates than girls.
  • 15.2% had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys at 33.5% and girls at 2.1%.
  • 1.6% currently use other tobacco forms.
• Secondhand Smoke Exposure: High exposure is noted, with 57.3% living in homes where others smoke. Additionally, 85.8% believe smoking should be banned in public places.

Attitudes and Knowledge

• Respondents demonstrate strong awareness, with 85.8% supporting public smoking bans and 72.5% believing secondhand smoke is harmful.
• Media influence is significant; 88.9% viewed anti-smoking ads, while many saw pro-tobacco advertisements. About 75.3% received classroom lessons on smoking dangers.
